Happy 4th of July. God Bless America was written by Irving Berlin while serving in the US Army in 1918. He wrote this song with gratitude for the United States. All royalties were gifted to the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, approximately $10m to-date. Irving Berlin was a Jewish immigrant from Russia, and so appreciative of the freedom and opportunities in the USA. He wrote 17 scores for Broadway musicals and Revues.
Let’s not forget history - Frederick Douglass, the great abolitionist, was asked to make a 4th of July speech in Rochester, NY in 1852, when slavery was still going strong! 3.9 million black people were still enslaved in this country in 1860… only after Juneteenth 1865, could all Americans finally celebrate Independence Day.
